Well, good evening everyone. First of all, thank you very much for the invitation and for this award that represents my affection for Israel as President, as an Argentine, and as a lover of the ideas of freedom. Thanks to Pastor Mario Bramnick for organizing this event to combat antisemitism, and of course to everyone present. Additionally, in the front rows, I see great friends. Thank you, thank you for this beautiful moment you are giving me.
Moreover, I want to take this opportunity to congratulate my friend Bibi Netanyahu on the result obtained in the recent elections in Israel. Today, more than ever, it is necessary for Israel to consolidate a strong and representative leadership that allows it to face the challenges of this new stage. Taking the reins of the Jewish state has never been an easy task, much less amid a global resurgence of antisemitism, used as a weapon against its right to exist, combined with the complicit silence of a large part of the international media.
I also want to use this space, which brings together representatives from multiple faiths and religions, to celebrate the upcoming visit of Pope Leon XIV to Argentina, the first since John Paul II passed through our country in 1987. This event will serve to reinforce our commitment to Judeo-Christian values, which are the foundations of the West and from which our greatness as a civilization emanates. An event like this, which gathers all of us who share a common religious ancestry, speaks to the importance of faith in our present, a present that, it must be said, needs it more than ever. As you well know, from the first day of our government, we have stood by Israel, changing the course of Argentine foreign policy away from the West.
But it is necessary to clarify that we do not defend Israel out of the President of the Nation's personal whim, but because today it is the bulwark of our values in the world against those who want to destroy us. I speak of the values that encompass all Argentines as Westerners. And it is enough to read the Ten Commandments to understand the values that shaped the West. From the beginning, the Creator gives us freedom when He states: ‘I am your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.’
This means that first He makes us free; and only then do responsibilities come: you shall not murder, the life of each one is inviolable; you shall not steal, what each person creates with their work belongs to them; you shall not bear false witness, the pledged word sustains the contract and trust between people; you shall not covet, no one has the right over what belongs to another. That is why the best definition of liberalism is the one coined by Alberto Benegas Lynch (son), which states that it is the unrestricted respect for the life project of others based on the principle of non-aggression and in defense of the right to life, liberty, and property.
Because it encompasses both freedom and the necessary responsibilities for freedom to be fruitful and not simply license.
For that reason, these values are at the heart of the moral compass of this State policy that shapes the agenda of this Government. Every measure we take starts from justice and respect for the natural right to life, liberty, and property. These notions that define who we are make our civilization unique, inherited from the Holy Scriptures. For us, those values are non-negotiable, they are an essential part of our identity and we will defend them wherever attempts are made to undermine the foundations of our societies, both from internal and external enemies.
Today, terrorism and antisemitism seek to break these ties and shatter our confidence in the values that unite us. Argentina knows what it talks about when it speaks of terrorism because it knows it firsthand; the attack on the Israeli Embassy in 1992 and on AMIA in 1994 left 114 innocent victims dead. Today justice recognizes that they were crimes against humanity and points to the responsibility of Iran and Hezbollah. While other governments signed a memorandum with Iran, we signed one with the liberal democracy of Israel.
And in that battle, the terrorists are not alone; they have the support of the international left, which works day by day to undermine trust in liberal governments and pave the way for those who, from the outside, attack our way of life. Their only objective is the complete destruction of the West and everything it represents. And this is not something new. Isaiah already warned: woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who make darkness light and light darkness, it is what those who justify terrorism and blame its victims do.
They want to blur the truth, invert our values, and leave us defenseless against the advance of barbarism. And I am not merely talking about material destruction, but about something much deeper: they are after the intangible, spiritual aspects, without which none of what our ancestors built would have been possible. And on the ground, they offer a substitute: the total state instead of God. Or as we liberals would say, the fatal arrogance.
They promise immediate paradise, but that paradise is always a massacre and a systematic robbery away. The promise of fullness overnight is the promise of the dog chasing its own tail, but can never catch it. And the promise of turning the state into God and achieving paradise on earth overnight always results in a hell: a hell of poverty, misery, and war. They do not compare our liberal democracies with their totalitarian dystopias. No, they compare it to the imaginary paradise they are trying to sell. And from that false comparison, they criticize the entire theoretical and moral framework of our societies.
Thus, when a democracy fights against terrorists who hide behind the civilian population, they only criticize democracy for not being able to prevent absolutely all collateral victims. When Israel fights for its survival, they call for sanctions, embargoes, and restrictions. When Hamas extorts with hostages, or when terrorism blocks the world's trade routes, they only blame Israel or the United States for not yielding to their blackmail, to their extortion.
Some yield to evil out of cowardice, believing that appeasement is the best strategy; others, more intelligent, yield because they know that appeasement only worsens terrorism. Let us not be confused; they want the enemies of the West to win and only cry when these enemies are rightly defeated. Today, all this is evident to the world thanks to the vision of great leaders like Donald Trump and Bibi Netanyahu. Therefore, our duty is to reconnect with ourselves as a Western civilization, to stop taking for granted everything we have achieved, to remember that the price of freedom is eternal vigilance, to be clear that those who mess with Israel mess with all of the West, and that we will not rest for a second to safeguard the treasure of our civilizational heritage.
More than 2000 years ago, the Maccabees faced an empire far more powerful than they were and understood that victory depends on the forces that the heavens… Maccabees, 3:19: victory in battle does not depend on the number of soldiers but on the forces that come from heaven. Amen.
In this sense, much more than the size of the army, today Israel holds that same light in the face of darkness, and Argentina has chosen to be by its side. Therefore, may God bless the Argentine Republic, may God bless Israel and the West, may the forces of heaven accompany us, and viva la libertad, carajo (long live freedom, damn it). Thank you very much.
